For a white tiger to be born, both of its parents must carry this recessive gene. However, the occurrence of this genetic combination is incredibly rare in the wild. Scientists estimate that only 1 in 10,000 wild Bengal tigers possess the right genetic makeup to produce a white cub.


Why Are White Tigers So Rare?


White tigers are primarily rare due to their specific genetic requirements. In the wild, the chances of two tigers carrying the recessive gene meeting and reproducing are extremely low. Additionally, their pale coloration makes them more visible in their natural habitats, such as forests and grasslands, putting them at a disadvantage when hunting or hiding from predators.

Most of the white tigers we see today exist in captivity, where breeding programs have intentionally paired tigers with the recessive gene to produce more white offspring.


Where Are White Tigers Found?


White tigers are no longer found in the wild. They were once spotted in regions of India, particularly in Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, and Odisha. The last known wild white tiger was captured in 1951. Named "Mohan," this tiger became the ancestor of most white tigers found in captivity today.

Why Do White Tigers Exist in Captivity?

Consequently, many conservationists oppose the breeding of white tigers, arguing that it does not benefit the species as a whole.
