The History of Balinese Cat Breed

The Balinese cat is a magical cat. This is basically a variety of longhaired Siamese cats. The early history of the Balinese cat is unknown but The Balinese cat is closely related to the Siamese cat.

It is said that, in the mid-1800s, some Siamese cats were imported from Thailand to the U.S. and UK, some of these Siameses carried the recessive long-haired gene.

There was a record about this, In the year 1871, Penny Illustrated magazine refers to a longhaired Siamese cat on a Chinese tapestry. The Cat Fanciers Federation (CFF) registered them as longhair Siamese in the year of 1928 but very little is known of how they came on.

In the early 1900s, longhaired kittens were born in litters of pedigree Siamese cats. 

How the long hair gene comes in the Siamese cat?

Some people believe the recessive gene for long hair has come from the European Siamese gene pool after World War-I. Some people believe that the recessive gene for long hair comes from a natural mutation. Some people believe the recessive gene comes from a cross-breeding by Siamese with an Angora or maybe a Persian. But no one can say surly how the log hair gene comes in Siamese litters.

The recorded history of Balinese is found in the year of the 1950s when true-breeding programs were popular.

Sometimes, long-haired kittens were born in Siamese litters. They are known as “fuzzy” kittens. This longer coat being undesirable, the breeders Thought that this was a fault in the bloodlines and they sold exclusively as pets.

In the year of 1950, Siamese breeders Marion Dorsey in California and Helen Smith in New York had found two Long-haired kittens in their Siamese litters. The kittens were so adorable looking so the two breeders fell in love with them.

The breeders decided to develop the long-haired kittens as a separate breed and that was the first breeding program for Balinese cats.

The name of "Balinese" does not mean that this cat comes from Bali or Indonesia.

Breeder Helen Smith dubbed the new breed "Balinese." The cats were so elegant and graceful. Of the famous colorful Balinese dancers. So, she chooses the name Balinese for the new breed. There is no connection between Balinese cats and the country of Bali.

In the period of the 50s to ’the 60s the two breeders, Helen and Marion worked together to establish the breed standard and to gain to establish as a new breed. The Empire Cat Show in New York City Helen Smith was the first to exhibit Balinese in CFA in the AOV class and in early 1956 and Mrs. Dorsey showed in a CFF show in Glendale, California.

From the 1960s to 1970s breeder Sylvia Holland worked with all of the Balinese breeders together to establish the breed standard and have it recognized in all associations.

At this time an association was formed by the name, "the Balinese Breeders and Fans of America''. (B.B.F.A.)

All of the breeders help each other by outcrossing the breed to expand the gene pool. In this period Sylvia Holland do hard work and finally, in 1965 they had been accepted in all associations without CFA. But they need CFA acceptance. In the year of 1967, Sylvia Holland attended CFA’s annual convention and saw the Balinese granted Provisional status.

In 1965 and 1967 The Balinese Breeders and Fans of America'' (B.B.F.A.) write the first breed standards which were revised again for CFA in 1970. Finally, in the year of 1970, they were accepted for Championship status.

Finally, in 1979 The International Cat Association recognized the breed and allowed all colors, including red, cream, tortoiseshell, and pointed coats in various shades and patterns.

Originally, The Balinese comes were only four recognized colors -

01. Seal,

02. Brown, 

03. Blue, and

04. Lilac. 

Now we see in Frost (light gray), blue, chocolate, seal (seal), cream, red, lilac, fawn (fawn) Colour in the Balinese family.

Coat: 

Silky, smooth, fine, abundant, semi-long on the body, and long on the belly, shoulders, and tail.

Coat color: 

White, with solid spots and tabby spots in various solid and turtle colorations

The hair is not exactly long but of medium length. Its length can best be seen in the hairs on the tail

Balinese Personality, Temperament, and Behaviour:

The Balinese is an Ancestor of the Siamese. So their temperament is similar to the Siamese but The Balinese is quieter than the Siamese because of the influence of the longhair gene.

Balinese looks beautiful and lovely. They are helpful and like to follow, so all the time they follow you whatever you’re doing. For this following nature, it's easy to train a Balinese cat. Sometimes you feel like they are trained you because as for the following nature they supervise your every move.

The Balinese highly demand human companions and attention. When you are at home your Balinese will not want to lose your focus even for a moment. He will be in your lap when you are sitting down,. Balinese cats are very clean. They will immediately grasp the usefulness of the sandbox, even if they are kittens. Of course, it is advisable not to use scented litters, since there are some cats that do not like the smell and carry out their bowel movements outside the litter box for this reason. On the other hand, it is imperative to brush the Balinese cat at least three times a week.
